Alabama Car Insurance Laws

Did you know it's illegal to drive with a blindfold in Alabama? Not very surprising, huh. Did you know driving without auto insurance in Alabama is against the law too? Make sure you have the right amount of coverage to keep you legal with Direct Auto.

Alabama state law requires you have the following minimum auto insurance coverage:

Alabama Car Insurance Requirements

  • Bodily Injury Liability Bodily injury coverage of at least $25,000 is required to cover injury or death to any person that results from an auto accident. You are also required to have $50,000 worth of coverage for injuries to or death of more than one person resulting from a single auto accident.

  • Property Damage Liability – You are required to have coverage of at least $25,000 for damage to the property of others caused by an auto accident.

In addition to liability coverage, Alabama law requires that you carry proof of insurance in all vehicles.

Auto insurance companies are required to offer drivers uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM) at the same limits as your liability coverage, but drivers do not have to accept it. Rejection of UM/UIM must be in writing.

Alabama Motorcycle Insurance Laws

Motorcyclists are also required by law to be covered by motorcycle insurance. The required financial responsibility for motorcycles in Alabama is the same as it is for automobiles.

Not all motorcycle policies in all states cover passengers. Never assume that motorcycle guest passengers are automatically covered by motorcycle liability insurance. Motorcycle Guest Passenger Liability (GPL) must be purchased in order to cover passengers. This coverage will cover passengers if you are found to be liable or legally at fault for any accident.

Always practice safety precautions when riding a motorcycle. Safety gear and safe driving are important. For more information, check out our motorcycle safety tips.
