Switching Car Insurance Companies Could Save You Money

If you've been with your current car insurance company for at least six months, you may be able to switch to Direct Auto Insurance and take advantage of prior insurance coverage savings!

Does My Previous Insurance Policy Qualify Me for Savings?

You may be eligible for prior insurance coverage savings from Direct Auto if:

  • You have continuously maintained liability coverage with another auto insurance company for at least six months.
  • You have not had more than 90 days of lapse in previous coverage.
  • You can show acceptable proof of prior insurance.

What's liability coverage? Liability coverage refers to two insurance coverages: bodily injury coverage and property damage liability coverage. Most states require some level of liability coverage. If you're liable for injury to another person as a result of a car accident, your bodily injury coverage will help pay for their medical expenses. Similarly, property damage liability helps pay for damage to another person's property that occurs in an accident you cause.

What do you mean by "lapse?" A lapse in coverage means that your insurance is terminated and you become uninsured for some time. It doesn’t matter if your policy is canceled one day or six months—a lapse is a lapse, regardless of how long or short it is.

How Do I Show Proof of Insurance?

To be eligible for these savings, you must show proof of prior insurance. Acceptable proof of prior insurance includes:

  • A renewal quote from your insurance company
  • A letter from your insurance company or agent
  • Your insurance ID card or declarations page
  • Cancellation notice from your insurance company (before that cancellation takes effect)

In general, these documents must show an expiration date within seven days before or after the effective date of your new auto insurance policy with Direct Auto.

Having proof of insurance is important if you want to qualify for prior coverage savings while also staying legal on the road! If you get pulled over by a police officer and aren't able to show proof of insurance, you could receive a ticket, face fines, or have your driver's license and vehicle registration suspended. Laws vary from state to state.
