Why We Celebrate Black History Month

At Direct Auto Insurance we’re not just an insurance company – we’re a family. This means we celebrate, respect, and support one another’s past, present, and future accomplishments, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

African Americans have made invaluable contributions to the culture and economy of this country. In honor of Black History Month, we’re taking the time to shed light on a few, lesser known figures who deserve recognition, as well as hosting a sweepstakes in our local stores and making donations to historically black colleges and universities.

How You Can Join the Celebration

Stop by a Direct Auto Insurance location near you or give us a call at 1-877-GO-DIRECT to enter for a chance to win $500!* Each of our regions will also be donating $500 to a historically black institution in their area .

Take part in your local celebrations and events as well, or host your own! Here are a few activities for all ages that can help bring to life the spirit of Black History Month (inspired by Scholastic.com ):

  • Take a road trip in honor of Black History Month . Bob Riel of examiner.com outlines a great tour that runs from Topeka, KS, to Atlanta, GA , but you can obviously do the trip in reverse or just focus on portions that are closer to your home. This trip includes locations that were critically important in the Civil Rights movement, including the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, and the Edmunds Pettis Bridge.
  • Play the African counting game Mancala . You can make your own board using an egg carton (remove the lid) and taping an extra cup (from another carton) to each end.
  • Learn the songs of the Civil Rights movement on your instrument of choice, such as “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” “This Little Light of Mine,” and “Oh, Freedom.” Notice how the lyrics reflect the defiant and hopeful spirit of the time.
  • Listen to great African-American jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington while you…
  • Cook up your favorite soul food recipes from Black America Cooks !
