Qualifying for a Good Student Discount

The grass is green, the sky is blue, and car insurance for teen drivers isn't always cheap. It's one of the many facts of life! You probably already knew about the grass and sky, but did you also know that there are ways to make teen car insurance cheaper? By simply doing well in school, young drivers could qualify for a Good Student Discount of up to 10% from Direct Auto Insurance. Put on your learning cap and jot down these tips to get on the right track for qualifying today!

Tip #1: Stay in school

You must be a full-time student in high school, college, or vocational/technical school in order to be eligible for a good student discount, but you don't have to be a traditional student! You could be an adult headed back to school for a career change. As long as you're enrolled in school full-time, you could qualify for additional savings on your car insurance.

Tip #2: Do your homework

Staying on top of homework assignments and doing well on tests can lead to good grades, financial aid, and some scholarships, but also great car insurance savings. To qualify for a good student discount, you must have a B average or better and/or rank scholastically in the upper 20% of the class. You do the homework, we'll help you save.

Tip #3: Shoot for the Honor Roll

Aim high! Make it your goal to snag a spot on the Honor Roll or Dean's List, as this can help you snag a good student discount too. (Hint: Our last tip can help you get there too!) The requirements for Honor Roll may vary by school, so talk to your guidance counselor or teachers to see what you need to do. There is generally a certain grade point average (GPA) you need to achieve. Some schools also have extracurricular or behavioral requirements.

Tip #4: Challenge yourself

Honors classes like Accelerated Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes are generally given more weight in GPA calculations. You might be able to give your GPA a boost if you can make good grades in honors classes, getting you one step closer to car insurance savings!

Tip #5: Ask for help

Just like our agents are here to help you tackle tough insurance questions, your teachers are there to help you tackle tough assignments. Ask for help before you get behind to give yourself the best chance at getting the grades you want and the discounts you deserve.

Tip #6: Wait until after graduation to get married

You must be unmarried in order to be eligible for a good student discount. Can your true love wait? If not, that's okay. There could be other car insurance discounts that you qualify for, like a Multi-Car Discount.

Determination, focus, and success at school can pay off in so many ways, including making it easier to pay for car insurance.
